The 1968 Ford GT Mark IV was the final evolution of Ford's ambitious GT racing program, though its primary racing success came a year earlier. Built for endurance racing, the GT Mark IV was powered by a 7.0-liter V8 and featured an all-American design and build. Its most notable achievement was winning the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans with drivers Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt, marking the first—and only—Le Mans victory for an entirely American car, team, and driver lineup. By 1968, however, changes in racing regulations limiting engine size effectively ended the Mark IV's competitive life, and Ford shifted focus to the smaller, European-built GT40, which went on to win Le Mans in 1968 and 1969.
