The 1972 L&M Porsche 917/10, driven by George Follmer for the Penske Racing team, marked the beginning of Porsche’s domination of the brutal Can-Am series. Sponsored by L&M and finished in its striking yellow-and-black livery, the open-cockpit Porsche 917/10 was powered by a ferocious turbocharged flat-12 engine producing well over 900 horsepower in qualifying trim. Under the direction of Roger Penske and engineer Mark Donohue, the car combined immense power with meticulous preparation, allowing Follmer—who stepped in unexpectedly for the injured Donohue—to win five races and secure the 1972 Can-Am championship. The 917/10’s success ushered in the era of turbocharged dominance that would culminate in the even more extreme 917/30 the following season.
